Daylight saving time (DST) is the practice of moving clocks forward by one hour during part of the year, typically in spring and summer, so that evening daylight lasts longer. Clocks are then moved back in autumn. The idea began in the early 20th century as a way to make better use of natural daylight, and today it is applied differently around the world, or not at all.
Most of North America and Europe observe DST from spring to autumn. In the European Union, clocks move forward on the last Sunday of March and back on the last Sunday of October, changing at 01:00 UTC. In the United States and Canada, DST generally runs from the second Sunday of March to the first Sunday of November, though the exact rule is set by national or local law and can change.
Countries such as Australia, New Zealand, and Chile observe DST on the opposite schedule, since their summer falls between roughly October and April. Clocks typically move forward in local spring (around September or October) and back in local autumn (around March or April).
Most countries near the equator, including the majority of Africa, South Asia, and Southeast Asia, do not observe daylight saving time at all, since day length there varies little across the year. China, Japan, India, and most of the Middle East also keep a single time year-round.
DST is not always a whole-country decision. For example, most of Arizona in the United States does not observe DST while the rest of the country does, and similar regional exceptions exist elsewhere. Always check the specific city or region rather than assuming a whole country follows one rule.
